Language in Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka, as a traveler, you can travel through the country with English. English was the official language of Sri Lanka until 1957, is still the lingua franca and educational language of Sri Lanka and is spoken in the tourism industry.

The majority of the population (about 72%) belongs to the ethnic group of the Sinhalese. The Tamils represent the second largest ethnic group in the country. Sinhala (සිංහල) and Tamil (தமிழ்) are the official languages of Sri Lanka. Due to this tripartite pision, most place signs are inscribed in three languages or characters: Sinhala, Tamil and English.
